Ages 3-Kindergarten: Catechesis of the Good Shepherd
The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) program is offered to 3 through 5 year olds in our parish. Visit our Faith Formation Programs page for more information about this unique catechetical program for young children!
Please note that the Wednesday evening CGS meeting times are 15 minutes longer than the Faith Formation times and meet on a weekly basis. This is due to the nature of the program. There are three options for CGS sessions:
Wednesday, Morning Session: 9:15 to 10:45 a.m
Wednesday Early Session: 4:30 to 6:00 p.m.
Wednesday Late Session: 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.
Spots are limited and are filled on a first come, first serve basis. If you register for a session that is full, we will refund your payment.
Kindergarten Students
Families with Kindergarten students have a few Faith Formation options to pick from based on what works best for their families:
Option 1: Enroll your kindergartener in CGS. This is a wonderful program for children in the 3 year old through kindergarten age range, and includes many presentations and materials that are developmentally appropriate.
Option 2: If you have older children who are attending Family of Faith, your kindergartener is welcome to join your family for this curriculum and the family sessions. Many of the activities require basic reading skills and might be a bit advanced for this age child, but it is entirely possible if the parents are open to spending some additional time with kindergarten aged children. You are welcome to come and preview the Family of Faith books before making your decision.
Option 3: Wait to enroll your kindergartener in Faith Formation until they are in 1st grade. The Faith Education Coordinator is also happy to provide ideas for additional at-home Faith Formation materials to help you continue to form a foundation for your child's faith.
One year of Faith Formation classes is required before beginning sacramental preparation classes for First Reconciliation and First Communion.
2nd grade students meet twice a month on Wednesday evenings from 6:45 to 8:00 p.m. for sacramental preparation in a classroom setting (parents are not required to attend these sessions). The 2nd grade class dates correspond to the evenings when the families meet in their Family of Faith family groups.
2nd graders do not attend Family of Faith sessions, but will receive a Family of Faith activity book so they can join their families in working through the materials at home.
Students typically complete sacramental preparation during 2nd grade, but older students can also attend these classes. Students must complete one year of the Family of Faith program before beginning sacramental preparation.
The $20 2nd Grade Sacramental Preparation Fee of is waived if your 2nd grade child is the only 1st-6th grade child registered in the program. The cost will be $75.
1st, and 3rd through 6th graders along with at least one parent gather together one Wednesday each month for Family Sessions in small groups of other families. Families receive an introduction to the month's topic and work on a part of the month's lesson. The families then continue to work on the rest of the month's lessons at home.
There are two session options for families:
Wednesday Early Session: 4:30 to 5:45 p.m.
Wednesday Late Session: 6:45 to 8:00 p.m.
Families will be assigned to meet on either the 1st, 2nd, or 4th Wednesday of the month.
Due to space restrictions, we are unable to offer childcare. Younger children have the option of being enrolled in Catechesis of the Good Shepherd.
7th through 10th grade students meet in Discipleship Groups for community, prayer, catechesis, service, formation, and discussion on a variety of topics.
Discipleship Groups meet weekly on Wednesday evenings from 6:45 to 8:00 p.m. in classrooms at Gehlen.
Confirmation preparation is incorporated into the Discipleship Group curriculum beginning in 9th grade.
